Czechoslovakia, former federative nation in central Europe, south of Germany and Poland. It ceased to exist in 1993, when the Czech Republic and Slovakia emerged as independent nations. In July 1992 Slovakia declared its sovereignty, and the following January the Czechoslovak federation was replaced by two new independent states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
